Emotional Intelligence Development
Research has shown that an individual’s Emotional Intelligence is often a more accurate predictor of success than an individual’s IQ. No matter how intellectually intelligent someone is, their success is still directed by how well they communicate their ideas and interact with their peers.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence is the unique set of emotional skills that a person uses to navigate the everyday challenges of life. In his book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, Daniel Goleman defines EI as the “capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and our relationships.”
Another defiinition is “The ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional meanings, and to reflectively regulate emotions in ways that promote emotional and intellectual growth.”
Emotional Intelligence influences the way we:
- Perceive and express ourselves·
- Develop and maintain social relationships·
- Cope with challenges·
- Use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way .
How does developing my EIQ help me and my business?
EI Empowers Coaches
Emotions motivate us and focus our attention. Coaches need to see the intangible drivers of behavior, so we can see what’s actually motivating our clients. Coaches with high EI will have the insight to influence deeper awareness and transformation that starts from the inside. Emotions are a filter that shape what we see and how we evaluate information. Emotional intelligence allows coaches to perceive and manage these filters so we get a more accurate and useful understanding of our clients.
When coaches develop emotional intelligence they are more skilled at accessing and generating the emotions that let them connect with and influence their clients to deeper reflection and more powerful motivation.
